As the oldest local family-owned barbecue restaurant in South Carolina, legendary Melvin’s has been dishing out authentic wood-fired barbecue since 1939. Owner and pit master Melvin David Bessinger hails from the “first family of mustard-based barbecue.” His father, Melvin, was 10 years old when he found his dad, Big Joe Bessinger, and a friend in a farm shed concocting the original tangy mustard sauce that would put the Palmetto State on the mustard-based barbecue map.

Melvin Bessinger's Barbecue Restaurants are a South Carolina tradition that began in 1939. Generations later, Melvin's is still famous for serving the finest St. Louis style pork ribs, pork shoulders, chicken and pulled pork barbecue - not just in Charleston, but the whole South!

  •  If you've never been to Melvin's, you're clearly missing out on THE BEST barbecue in the entire South, hands down. For those who may be traveling from the Northern or Western US, first know that BARBECUE is *not* the same as grilling. (We get it. You're new here. You've been taught wrong. It's okay.) Barbecue is not a *verb* in the South, it's a noun. You grill a hamburger. Barbecue is pulled pork, and Melvin's is (as I said) THE BEST representation of good wholesome Southern barbecue. Their burgers also fall into the BEST category as well. Heck, their french fries (I call them freedom fries) are so good, you really don't even need to waste time with the catsup bottle. Their portions are great, their service is great, and the whole experience is life-changing. Plan on leaving stuffed.

  •  Great place to enjoy Carolina BBQ. I'm from Texas originally and can be a BBQ snob and this passed the test! Loved the ribs and brisket. The waitress was super helpful and got us to order a few things we had not tried before. Don't forget the cornbread! It's worth every bite.

My husband frequently picks up food to go for us, and the staff has gotten to know him by name. The customer service is fantastic.
